Welcome to Epping Ongar Railway

Class 37 at North Weald Station

This is the official website of Epping Ongar Railway

There are 7 days and 23 hours until the resumption of passenger services

You've arrived at the website of the Epping Ongar Railway. Here you will find all the details for visiting the line, timetables and fares, latest news and developments at the railway, details of driver experience and filming opportunities, and a look behind the scenes at the restoration work that the volunteers undertake to maintain our railway heritage as we work towards our long term aim of once again running passenger trains to Epping.

Our team of volunteers work hard to restore and maintain our infrastructure such as buildings, track, signals and also the rolling stock that will allow us to operate steam and diesel locomotive hauled trains for both visitors and locals, within an authentic heritage railway atmosphere.

The railway was part of a 10km stretch at the end of the Great Eastern, latterly LNER and London Central Line that runs through beautiful Essex Countryside. After LU suspended passenger services in 1994, the line was preserved as a heritage railway. Following years of neglect, the recent extensive infrastructure improvements and restoration work means EOR is now able to invite you to step back in time to enjoy the romance of heritage travel. The works have enabled us to increase the frequency and variety of trains, run steam and diesel locomotive hauled trains and ensure the long term future of the line.

All of this would not be possible without our enthusiastic and friendly team of volunteers, and there are many ways you can get involved, whether that is helping operate the trains, in the booking offices, retail and catering or being part of the restoration and maintenance gangs undertaking all manner of projects. There are work parties both on weekdays and weekends, and our friendly team is drawn from all ages and backgrounds (no prior railway experience is necessary) as we run services for the benefit of visitors, the local communities and economy...
