This is the official website of Epping Ongar Railway

Thank you for expressing an interest in contacting the railway, before you pick up the phone or email, please read these Frequently Asked Questions below for the answers to the most common questions....

What times are you open?
Please refer to this page which shows which days the railway is open. When no service/colour is shown the railway is not open to visitors.
The stations are open from 9am until approx. 30 minutes after the last train has departed from Ongar or arrived at North Weald

Are you open this week?
This page shows which days this week the railway is open for visitors. A colour in the calendar indicates the railway is open, no colour indicates that the railway is not open to visitors.

Are you open on other days to “just have a look round”?
Sadly it is not possible to permit visitors to have a look around when the railway is not open. This is because volunteers will be working at both stations and there may be hazardous activities taking place.

Can I buy my ticket from Epping / on the bus / Shenfield
You can either purchase online in advance or from the Bus Conductor on the heritage bus (from Epping or Shenfield) or from the booking office at either Ongar or North Weald station. Unfortunately you cannot buy your ticket from LUL Ticket Offices, including Epping.

What other places can we visit, walk to or eat at while in the area?
There are a host of additional places you can visit whilst in the area such as the North Weald Airfield Museum, Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear War bunker, the shops in Ongar High Street, etc. Please visit the “Local Attractions” page on our website for ideas, plus see Visit Epping Forest and Visit Ongar.

Can I book my ticket over the phone?
We regret that tickets (both daily and special events) cannot be booked over the telephone as being a volunteer railway we are unable to man the ticket office with volunteers 7 days a week – however you can book your tickets right now, securely, 24 hours a day and save £££ - Please click here - to book.

Please post me a leaflet?
Leaflets can be downloaded from our website along with all the current information, please click here to view. If for any reason you do require a brochure posted please forward a stamped addressed envelope to our office at Ongar; Epping Ongar Railway, Ongar Station, Station Road, Ongar, CM5 9BN marked brochure request.

We want to travel by steam train - what time do they run?
It is our intention to run steam hauled trains every day that the railway is open (except for some special events such as Diesel Galas), but in view of their age it is sometimes necessary to replace a steam locomotive with a diesel locomotive at short notice for operational reasons. Please click on the day you wish to travel on our timetables page, normally the first, the last and the lunchtime train are diesel hauled.

Can we bring the family dog?
Well-behaved dogs and guide dogs are welcome on the train and on the stations and buses (at no charge). We regret that Dogs are not allowed in First Class compartments/coaches. Water bowls are provided on the stations for well-behaved dogs to drink from.

Does our ticket allow us to travel all day on the buses and trains?
On standard operating days your tickets allows you unlimited travel on the heritage buses and trains on the day of purchase. For special events please refer to the page on our special events.

Can we get a cup of tea anywhere?
Limited refreshments are available in the “The Buffet Stop” refreshments facility at Ongar (Teas, Coffee, Ice Creams) and a wide selection of food and drink is available in our “Anglia” buffet coach at North Weald (sandwiches, cake, soup, crisps, soft drinks etc.)

How many constitute a group booking?
A group must be more than 15 persons travelling together and the tickets must be booked at least 14 days in advance – more details on Group Bookings here. To contact the Group Booking's team, please email:

What locomotives will be running this weekend?
To find out which locomotives are scheduled to be running this weekend you need to go to our locomotive roster page. Details are normally on the website two to three weeks before the operating weekend. However due to faults that could develop with steam locomotives we may have to substitute diesel for steam or vice versa. We endeavour to keep our Facebook and Twitter updated with any changes and updates which may occur during the day. Our crews will be on site from about 6:30am in the morning preparing the steam locomotive and raising steam and if a fault becomes evident in this time it may be necessary to substitute a diesel locomotive as there will not be time to prepare another steam locomotive.

Can I buy a concessionary ticket?

There are four categories of passenger who can buy a concessionary fare - proof of entitlement may be requested at the time of booking or redemption if you have bought an electronic ticket:

(a) Persons aged 60 or above;
(b) Disabled people;
(c) A carer accompanying a disabled person;
