Epping Ongar Railway unveiled its latest COMBINED bus, tube car and train at the Ongar Carnival!!
The vehicle is called “SUPERCAR” and was unveiled in January 1991 by London Transport. SUPERCAR appeared in TV adverts, promotional and press days to promote the “One Day Travelcard” (formally called the Capitalcard)!
The One Day Travelcard advert which made Supercar famous is now available on our EOR TV Channel!
Supercar was a one-off vehicle, built utilizing London Bus DMS Number 1515. The apprentices at Chiswick bus works used sections from a 1973 London Tube train and built a complete replica of a Network SouthEast “Networker” Class 321 for the rear portion. Even the interior of the three vehicles is correct with bus, tube and train seats! Supercar was subsequently rescued and restored by the experts at London Bus & Truck, who completely re-sprayed all three portions, worked on the mechanics and even made the missing buck-eye coupler for the rear.
Supercar will be out and about this summer, attending a number of functions and making some surprise appearances… so keep your eyes peeled and cameras ready…. next week Supercar will be at the Bus Rally on 1st July at North Weald airfield, when there will also be a special shuttle bus linking the railway and Bus Rally, details from the timetables page on our website.
